After much consideration and deliberation, we are thrilled to announce the successful applicants of our Crispin Ellison Bursary Award 2025.

Two selected applicants both receive a training package worth £1,000 to support their professional development in legacy administration.

The bursary, awarded by Legacy Futures, and Smee & Ford in partnership with the Institute of Legacy Management (ILM) is named in memory of Crispin Ellison, a former director of Legacy Futures, who dedicated his career to advancing professional knowledge and standards in the legacy sector.

This year, a record number of entries was received, making the achievements of the selected applicants even more impressive.

The big reveal

Many congratulations to this year’s Crispin Ellison Bursary Award winners:

Becky Jedrzejewski

Legacy Officer

Essex Wildlife Trust

Michelle Pagett

Head of Individual Giving

The Prince & Princess of Wales Hospice

For both Becky and Michelle, the award marks a significant opportunity to deepen their knowledge and expand their impact in the legacy sector.

Empowering through learning

Becky from Essex Wildlife Trust shared how the bursary will help her maximise legacy income while maintaining the highest standards of supporter care:

The legacy sector is a wonderfully collaborative place and I’m looking forward to being able to support others through my own personal development and learning, thanks to this special opportunity. This award will make a huge difference to my work at Essex Wildlife Trust – a local charity, with a small fundraising team. The training will allow me to confidently maximise our legacy income, whilst also ensuring that I can provide the highest level of care to our pledgers and the executors and families of our legators.

Michelle, from The Prince & Princess of Wales Hospice, echoed this sentiment:

This bursary will make a real difference — not only in my personal professional development but also in supporting the vital work we do at The Prince & Princess of Wales Hospice. Legacy giving is an increasingly important source of income for our hospice, helping us to provide specialist palliative care and support to patients and families when they need it most. The training package will allow me to deepen my knowledge and confidence in legacy administration, ensuring we are stewarding these incredibly generous gifts with the care, accuracy, and gratitude they deserve.

Recognising talent and commitment

This year’s judging panel was impressed by the strength of applications and the commitment shown by candidates across the board.

I was very impressed by this year’s candidates. Not only are they dedicated to their team and charity; they’re also committed to providing the best possible service to lay executors, service users and the many different parties legacy officers have to work with. Just reading the applications made me feel proud to be a legacy fundraiser. Beth Brook, Head of Legacy and In-Memory Fundraising at ActionAid UK

This was a really tough job – so many of the entries were really deserving of the bursary award. The two winners are both fairly new to the sector but they demonstrated a genuine desire to learn, share their knowledge and drive best practice at their respective charities. Matthew Lagden, CEO of ILM and fellow judge

Continuing Crispin’s legacy

As we celebrate Becky and Michelle’s achievements, we also reflect on the ongoing importance of supporting professional growth in the legacy sector. The Crispin Ellison Bursary Award is a testament to Crispin’s vision: investing in people, sharing knowledge, and upholding excellence in legacy giving.

Congratulations once again to this year’s recipients — we can't wait to see how their learning journeys help shape the future of legacy fundraising.
