The National Trust is one of the UK’s top legacy earning charities. They have a fantastic opportunity to grow their income further, thanks to the almost 20 million visits to their properties each year. However, property staff sometimes lack the knowledge and confidence to talk about gifts in Wills, so the opportunity is not currently being maximised.
The Trust has access to many fantastic stories. People working in properties can talk about the difference that gifts in Wills have made to their places, the people who have left or who plan to leave gifts, and what they’d love to do in the future.
We used stories to show how gifts in Wills can make an impact locally, and then worked with attendees to find their own stories to tell. Sessions finished with a story-telling walk around a property for attendees to share stories and see how easy it is to include gifts in Wills stories within their conversations.

A will is an expression of a person's final wishes, but occasionally, what should be a document reflecting the deceased's wishes may reveal signs of financial abuse. Financial abuse towards an elderly or dependent person can unfortunately extend to their will and financial abuse in wills can be subtle but devastating. It is crucial as legacy officers that we are able to recognise the signs and, where appropriate, take action to address any wrongdoing.
